Home Depot is seeking a Software Engineer Principal to join a high-impact initiative focused on Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) and Warehouse Control Systems (WCS), including conveyor routing, sortation, order streaming, and task optimization. This role will architect and design software systems, collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and UX teams. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between software design and warehouse automation, understanding conveyors, PLCs, and WES/WCS functionality. The Principal Software Engineer will have a significant impact on Home Depot’s next-generation fulfillment systems and will lead the architecture and technical design of the WES/WCS software, starting with conveyor-focused solutions but eventually contributing across broader warehouse optimization initiatives.

Requirements:
6–8+ years of experience in large-scale enterprise engineering or software development roles
Experience designing and architecting software systems
Hands-on experience with WES/WCS (Warehouse Execution/Warehouse Control Systems), including designing or guiding software that controls conveyor routing, sortation, order streaming, goods-to-person systems, and task/labor optimization, with integration to PLCs and warehouse automation
Strong understanding of conveyor control systems, routing systems, sortation systems, merge systems, goods-to-person systems, order streaming/work release systems, and warehouse execution systems
Proficiency in Java (preferred), C, C++, or similar languages
Strong understanding of conveyors, routing logic, and PLC communication (Allen-Bradley or similar)
Experience guiding developers and building reusable software components
Experience with greenfield projects, reference implementations, and architectural design
Strong technical communication skills with engineers, product teams, and leadership
Exposure to robotics, warehouse automation, or task/labor optimization systems
Experience with cloud deployments (GCP, AWS, or Azure)

Nice to have:
Large-scale enterprise environments
Experience with integrators or conveyor-focused companies (Ex. Intelligrated, Dematic, Trew, Matthews, Fortna, Honeywell

Responsibilities:
Design, architect, and implement WES/WCS software systems and conveyor routing logic, including conveyor routing, sortation, order streaming, goods-to-person, and task/labor optimization
Guide development teams in coding, testing, and integrating software with PLCs
Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and UX teams to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions
Create reusable code elements, architectural diagrams, and technical documentation for both technical and operational stakeholders
Define and monitor service level objectives (SLOs) to maintain production reliability
Mentor junior engineers and support team skill development
Communicate technical designs and requirements clearly with developers and leadership
Monitor system performance and reliability, ensuring production standards are met
Engage with vendors, integrators, and the open-source community as needed
