Fiber Characterization (FC) Field Technician

Job Description:
• Perform fiber characterization testing using EXFO and OTDR equipment (no chromatic dispersion testing required)
• Connect and operate light meters from Point A to Point B to verify fiber path integrity
• Conduct end-to-end span testing—typically two sites per day—covering distances between locations (1–1.5 hours apart)
• Capture and share OTDR traces and screenshots with Tech Leads via Zoom for review
• Work collaboratively with the Tech Lead to confirm results, identify issues, and understand next steps for remediation
• Adhere to testing parameters, ensuring total fiber loss does not exceed 15bd (approx. 2bd loss per mile)
• Travel extensively to field sites across multiple regions (100% travel required)
• Follow Ciena’s FC training program and complete all required courses within the first week
• Support cross-training initiatives to broaden field skillsets and maintain operational flexibility
• Log time, travel, and project details in QuickBase (QB) for review and approval

Requirements:
• 2–4 years of experience in fiber optics, telecom field services, or related environment
• Hands-on experience with OTDR and EXFO testing tools
• Understanding of fiber span testing, loss analysis, and event trace interpretation
• Ability to travel 100% of the time across assigned regions
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills—comfortable working with remote leads over Zoom
• Valid driver’s license and ability to manage rental car logistics
• Strong problem-solving attitude and eagerness to learn new technologies
• Must complete Ciena’s required Fiber Characterization (FC) and AT&T training programs

Per Diem: $178/day (includes $118 for hotel + meal allowance; higher in high-cost areas)
Schedule: 8–12 hour days; typically two sites per day
Tools Provided: OTDR and EXFO kits (WiFi-enabled devices)
Travel: Nationwide, full-time
